Who needs slides? You can bore ‘em with these cool cameras

April28

Things like the sweet, banana-like smell of school quizzes run off on a mimeograph machine. A Xerox or a form on a computer screen don’t give you that same warm, fuzzy feeling.

Sometimes the things you lose may not be sweet but are still the source of great memories, like Dad trapping people in the living room and bringing out the slide projector and unfurling the screen to show pictures of the family vacation to a squirming, captive audience. There’s no need for that anymore with Facebook and Picasa and Flickr and photos and videos attached to e-mail.

Still, my favorite new gadget of 2009 made it to the top of my list just because it recaptures that nostalgia and allows you to trap audiences anywhere — at other people’s homes, in co-worker’s cubicles, in the men’s room at the rest stop off the turnpike. The possibilities to annoy and bore people are endless and hilarious. The Nikon S1000pj looks like an ordinary point-and-shoot camera, but it can project still images and videos on walls anywhere. Also cool in a ’60s nostalgia way is the Fujifilm Finepix Real 30 W1 that takes 3-D pictures and displays them in 3-D instantly on its 2.8-inch screen.

It provides global wireless access to books, newspapers and magazines, full PDF documents, Internet access, free book samples, rotatable views, a read-out-loud option and your paper delivered electronically during the wee hours of the morning. Best of all, Amazon is selling bestselling books on all its Kindles at $9.99, a third of what they may cost in hardback, so if you do a lot of reading, it could pay for itself.

$489, amazon.com The iPhone 3GS makes the iconic device even better. The iPhone 3GS finally adds features it should have had in the beginning, like multimedia messaging, video recording, and voice dialing. It’s faster; and has better battery life. Its media features are still awe-inspiring. But it still is mediocre at best as a phone, with shaky call quality and uneven reception. AT&T is working hard, though, to improve its network.

It’s making up ground on the iPhone fast in terms of number of apps because of its open source approach, which allows more freedom and flexibility and creativity and ultimately will make it an even better product than the iPhone.

There’s a learning curb with the new taskbar and Aero Peek, but this OS is shockingly fun to use for something produced by Microsoft. It’s standard on new Microsoft computers, and my wife, who’s generally not exactly the first-adopter type, loves playing with it on her new laptop. The Toshiba Mini NB 205’s six-cell battery provides up to nine hours of unplugged power and the best keyboard of any netbook.

It has a 10.1-inch diagonal screen, an Intel atom N280 processor, 1 GB DDR 800MHz ram, upgradeable to 2 GB, 160 GB HDD storage, a memory card readers slot, 802.11 b/g wireless and 10/100 Ethernet, built in Skype, with a webcam, speaker and microphone.

To preview before purchasing this notebook processor and graphics Analysis

Background: Although online shopping is gradually popular, but for the purchase of the family, especially for the first time purchase, would they still go to stores interested in “seeing is believing.” However, the stores, “potential” of various Dell Inspiron 9400 Battery, really deeply stung the hearts of young buyers ~ “dual-core independence was the”, “high frequency”, “high memory” Bluff words such as these, I believe that every Users visiting the store often heard. However, for notebook processors, graphics complex models, how we want to be identified? Popular speaking, what type of processor can meet the needs of different users and what level of graphics to meet the basic requirements for office or entertainment. Analysis of this for everyone on the processor under the current knowledge and share tips on the card; suggest that you buy this before going to “preview” under the basic knowledge, so as not to eat the innocent “no culture” of the loss!

Processor Posts

With Intel’s new 32nm mobile processors, Intel mobile processors to further expand the scale of force. Rough calculation, the market can now buy the Core i, Core 2 Duo, Pentium dual-core, Celeron dual-core, Atom processor several family members have over 80 models, even if the laptop technology is always concern over people difficult to remember each one processor specifications.

First of all, the above outlined features of several types of processors, Atom processor that is mainly used in the present ATOM processor netbooks, press performance from low to high basic as: N270, N280, N450, note that they are single-core processing devices can imagine their performance is very weak, in addition to a simple Office software, Internet that is common to see the movie. Relative Celeron dual-core and entry-level Pentium dual-core processors are now commercially available dual-core Pentium based mainly on the basic model T4200, T4300 and the new T4400, we can also see from the model, serial number of properties have increased must improve.

Core 2 Duo processor that is more mainstream, the processor model to more than T5 and P at the beginning, the mainstream T series T6500, T6600 and T6670, this type of processor is sufficient to meet the basic application user; to P at the beginning of the Core 2 T at the beginning of processor performance is relatively stronger performance of the corresponding price will be high. Users purchase this is to see their needs, budget limited, T6600 processor enough to use.

I series for Core processors, presumably part of the user is not familiar with, i3 and i5 processors released until early this year, but the market equipped with i3, i5 processors, this one after another “appearance” of. i7 processors, although the end has been HP pavilion dv9000 Battery in 2009, but due to its positioning in the high-end, many users have not experienced its visual performance. i7 not say, is popular in terms of running speed. i3, i5 processor is popular for “dual core” processor, i3, i5 can be a common feature of all four virtual cores, the performance in performance over the Core 2 Duo P8700; i3 and i5 i5 support the largest difference is Core frequency acceleration, i3 does not support; For public users, i3 processor can fully meet the user application, and the current i3 of this (especially with the mold) by price is not high, do not listen to profiteers “Fudge.”

Recommends that users purchase the former do “preview work”, the following is a profile on the i5 processor and the current processor rank, the user can do reference.

Graphics article

That card, I believe many recreational users will think first of the game; right child, graphics pros and cons of a great extent determine the user gaming experience. But the face of numerous card types, types, and many families are unable to start, but the buyer the seller is seized of this weakness, the use of advertisement of their discrete graphics, and with a large-capacity memory; since many users to buy after that, the unique hand was attached to the lower end, can only meet to see high definition and play normal games.

Below is a brief analysis cards under the books, the current graphics card can be basically divided into three categories, notebook integrated graphics, mainly for the Intel X4500, and is often said that the A card (ATi card) and N card (nVIDIA graphics cards). Set was not saying much, mainly used in business, the business model of the X200 as it was set using the Intel X4500, this problem is not high-definition graphics look, not into playing games. On A card and N card, they have a lot of models, there are low, middle and high cards of different orientation. So many types of graphics, even in the 11 list, the user can hardly remember the following tips to the user some small. We often hear sellers into the store shouting: “This the use of high-end discrete graphics, has 1GB of memory!” To hear such a large-capacity memory, little knowledge of 12 friends very easily tempted; in this need to remind you that the memory card capacity decisive for the overall graphics performance is not great, but look at graphics-bit wide; the current low-end graphics card bit width are basically 64Bit, in the end probably 128Bit, so when users purchase the also need to ask its independent graphics bit wide.

For aficionados of the game, buy the obvious when it should HP pavilion DV6 battery attention to the merits of independence, or gaming experience will become Suoranfawei. Share this time to note that, for business use of the common integrated graphics, even with significant independence, the performance is relatively weak; relative positioning in the audio-visual, entertainment, books, cards a lot better, of course, prices also improved. The best comes when the user purchases a number such as 3DMark, the game’s Benchmark tests, which can reflect a more intuitive graphics performance.

Core frequency that shows the core of the operating frequency, somewhat similar to the CPU’s working frequency. It should be noted that the higher the frequency is not the core represents the more powerful graphics performance. For example 9600PRO core frequency reached 400MHz, the 380MHz higher than the 9800PRO, but definitely better than the performance 9800PRO 9600PRO. Chips in the same level, while high frequency performance of the core is stronger in, improve the core frequency is one way to overclocking graphics cards.

Memory frequency, memory cards work in the frequency to MHz (megahertz) for the unit. Memory frequency response to some extent the speed of the memory. With the memory of the type of memory frequency, performance varies, DDR3 memory is the most widely used high-end graphics card memory type. In addition, memory can provide memory of different frequencies also vary, mainly 400MHz, 500MHz, 600MHz, 650MHz and so on, high-end products are 800MHz, 1200MHz, 1600MHz, or even higher. Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT and above models of memory frequency has reached 800MHz.

Rendering pipeline, also known as the rendering pipeline, is to show graphics chip deal with separate parallel signal processing unit. Rendering pipeline is to determine the number of display chip performance and grades of one of the most important parameters, the same graphics core frequency, the more pipelines means greater pixel fill rate and texture fill rate, from the graphics card volume rendering pipeline can largely determine the grade level of graphics performance. Generally based on the number of rendering pipelines, “the number of pixel lines × the number of texture units per pipeline” to that. For example, GeForce 6800 rendering pipeline is 12 × 1, says that its has a 12 pixel pipeline, each filled with a texture pipeline.

RAMDAC, decided to update the frequency of high and low, to MHz unit, and displays the “bandwidth” meaning similar. The higher the speed of its work, the more Dell Inspiron 8600 Battery, high-resolution picture quality when the better. The value determined is sufficient memory, the graphics up to support the resolution and refresh rate. For example: If you are under 1024 × 768 resolution to 85Hz resolution, RAMDAC rate of at least 1024 × 768 × 85 × 1.344 ÷ 1.06 ? 90MHz. Current mainstream graphics card RAMDAC can reach 350MHz and 400MHz.

It seems a battered economy is good for the replacement battery business

April28

The first netbooks, such as the ASUS 701 4G and the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC, used Intel Celeron M and VIA C-7M CPUs. Now almost all netbooks use one of Intel’s low-end Atom CPUs, usually the Intel Atom N270 or Z520. Some newer netbooks feature the Atom N280, which consumes less power than the N270. Both these CPUs run at 1.6GHz,have a 512KB cache and a 533MHz front-side bus connection to the memory. The Intel Atom Z520 runs at 1.3GHz. They are all single-core CPUs but have Hyper-Threading. This means they are capable of running two processes simultaneously, which aids multitasking. The Intel Atom CPUs run much cooler than the Celeron and VIA CPUs (the VIA CPU in particular gets very hot inside the small confines of a netbook). AMD has released a low-voltage chip suitable for netbooks — the Athlon 64 L110 — but it isn’t widely used yet.

Of course, this being Vista, I have options — three of them, to be exact. To get a little more juice out of my Dell Inspiron 9200 battery, I can choose “Power saving” mode, where the screen goes so dim I feel like I’ve got cataracts and the processor churns so slowly that by the time the little hourglass/cursor stops spinning I’ve forgotten what it is I wanted to do in the first place. Then there’s the damn-the-batteries-full-speed-ahead “High performance”  mode, which with Vista means something comparable to the Windows 98 machine I owned a decade ago. And then there’s “Balanced,” which offers the worst of both worlds.

Brownouts are caused by a drop in voltage. (This is when your lights dim.) They can cause damage to unprotected electrical items.

A Rolling Blackout, is intentionally caused by the power company as a last resort when the load demand is greater than the capability of the power supply. They are planned blackouts to temporarily reduce the load demands.

It seems a battered economy is good for the replacement battery business. Sales at some stores are up 20 percent as people try to extend the lives of their electronics. Store manager Jonathan Dascotte says a new cell phone battery avoids the cost of a new phone and a new two-year contract.

MobileMark came into widespread use several years ago. It measures Dell Vostro 1000 battery life while a machine is performing a number of tasks, including playing a DVD or creating a spreadsheet. The test was developed by the Business Applications Performance Corporation (BAPCo), a nonprofit trade group whose membership is made up mostly of laptop and chip manufacturers. Indeed, BAPCo counts among its members Intel, one of the very companies who would stand to profit from the use of the MobileMark test.

China is a technology hub and things like Dell or Acer laptop batteries retail for cheaper prices. These batteries can be sold in bulk or individually and needless to say, better prices are always scored when purchases are made in bulk. At this point another idea springs up. Why not sell cheap high quality replacement laptop batteries from China.

Becker predicts that this sort of purchase will account for 64 percent of light vehicle sales by 2030. Calculating that electric vehicles are 10 to 13 cents per mile cheaper to own than gasoline cars, Becker forecasts that electric vehicles could account for 24 percent of the light-vehicle fleet by 2030.

ViewSonic Goes on a Launch Spree with new PC Products

April28

Today ViewSonic entered the PC Segment with a range of new launches which include netbooks, notebooks, mini PCs and PMPs. ViewSonic plans to expand its market in India much further by establishing a full base of operation, and have already started setting up warehouses, and billing points.

Among the products they launched today are their new range of notebooks which ViewSonic dubs ViewBooks. The ViewBook will be available in different configurations, the ViewBook 120, the ViewBook 130, the ViewBook 140 and the ViewBook Pro.

The ViewBook 120 is a 12.1″ wide screen notebook with a Celeron processor, 2GB RAM and a 250GB HDD. It comes with the usual card reader and a 1.3MP webcam, and touts a multi-touch trackpad which can take advantage of Windows 7 Home Premium which comes installed. It weighs 1.5kgs.

The ViewBook 130 and 140 features 13.3″ and 14″ screens respectively. Other than the screen size, they are similar in configuration, with a Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM and a 320GB HDD. Like the 120, it comes with a card reader, a webcam, a multitouch trackpad, and Windows 7 Home Premium. Both come with VGA and HDMI connectors.

The ViewBook Pro has the same configuration as the ViewBook 130, however it offers some additional features. First and foremost is the inclusion of an 8X DVD writer drive which is hot-swappable. The drive can be removed without needing any tools, and replaced with an additional battery which extends the power supply from 8hrs to 12 hrs. The ViewBook Pro also features a fingerprint sensor for more security.

The new Laptops launched are the ViewSonic NetBook 100 and 101, both of which are quite similar in features. The NetBook VNB 100 sports a wide 10″ screen with a resolution of 1024×600. It runs on an Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor with 1GB RAM, and a 160GB HDD. The NetBooks come with a 1.3MP webcamera, a 5-in-one card reader, and a standard touchpad. The 101 comes with a faster Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz processor, and a multi touch touchpad. The NetBooks run Windows XP home shunning the newer Windows 7.

ViewSonic has also launched a range of MiniPCs, the PC mini 120, 132, and 550. These are essentially PCs which have a very compact form-factor.

The PC mini 120 offers a compact design and can in fact be mounted behind a monitor. It offers a similar configuration as the NetBook 100 but allows for a RAM expansion up to 2GB. Like the NetBooks, it comes with Windows XP Home.

Features Of Sony Vaio X

April28

No-one can argue about the VAIO X Series’ design credentials. At 12.2mm, it’s precisely as thick as an iPhone, and its matte-black finish is reminiscent of a sheet of graphite (the only design oddity is its brown bottom). Even the screen drew admiring gasps: it’s wafer-thin, measuring 4.4mm when we clamped our calipers around it.

The main chassis is similarly slight. It’s so skinny the D-SUB port on the right-hand side looks oversized. There isn’t even room for a conventional network port, but rather than force people to lug around an adapter, Sony has cleverly created a hinged port: when you want to use it, the idea is to raise two tiny feet and this gives the hinge room to expand enough for you to slot in your cable.

Like other Sony notebooks, the keyboard on the VAIO X is island style, but at 88 percent of full size, it’s a bit smaller than most netbooks with 10- to 12-inch screens. Measuring 9.5 x 3.5 inches, the keyboard is about half an inch smaller in both directions than the Toshiba mini NB205, even though the VAIO X has a larger keyboard deck. This is because there’s about half an inch of space on either side of the keyboard.

Also notable is the Vaio’s touchpad, which supports multi-touch input. This allows gestures such as pinching together two fingers to zoom in, for example. A pair of flip-out feet underneath the chassis lifts it to angle the keyboard when on a desk, and we found the Vaio X Series comfortable to use when sitting on your lap as well, as the screen can be pushed quite far back to a suitable angle.

So while it was a ‘wow’ factor machine, Sony decided to try again with a cheaper Atom netbook with the VAIO W that stuck to the regular form factor that you’ll find in most netbooks but with the VAIO look and feel. The W wasn’t too bad of an effort, and was priced at a more affordable range comparable to other netbooks. Sure, it performed pretty much similar to other netbooks too, but well, it’s a Sony product you’re talking about.

Now, fast forward to just a few months later, and Sony has unveiled its latest netbook, the VAIO X. This time, the X looks set to razzle and dazzle with its super slim form factor, lightweight design and really expensive price. Of course, the magnesium alloy chassis and carbon fiber frame of the notebook doesn’t come cheap by any standards, but it does give it a feel that’s just perfect for the business users that this netbook is targeted at. How perfect you ask? We’ll find out more over the next few pages but let’s start with our usual exterior pictures and table of specifications first.

HDD scores in our PCMark 05 tests were definitely way up there compared against your usual 5400 RPM drives and handily beat the ASUS netbooks, so we’ve no complains there. Overall, it does show that the Intel Atom Z550 processor does handle better compared to the N280, though its main advantage is still the power savings associated with its lower power draw and TDP requirement despite having a higher clock speed.

There are two USB ports on the left-hand side of the chassis, plus a headphone socket, while slots for Memory Stick media and SD cards occupy the front. And that’s your lot. The rest of the design carries on this minimalist feel. Aside from a wireless switch, the only buttons to press are the two for the simple touchpad and the keyboard itself.

We were sceptical of Sony’s claimed eight-hour battery life for the Vaio X Series, especially after seeing the thinness of the battery pack in the base of the unit. Nevertheless, the unit lasted for five hours and 18 minutes in our tests using the Battery Eater Pro benchmark, which is an impressive score for such a thin and light laptop. We tested the Vaio in its configuration as delivered, except that the screen and suspend-to-disk timeouts were disabled to prevent the system turning off the backlight or going to sleep while the battery life test was running. Users may experience a shorter battery life than this in use, depending on how heavily they use the wireless communications, but should still be able to get several hours of use from the Vaio before a recharge is needed.

The Toshiba NB300 is an almost ideal netbook for travellers thanks to these functions, but even students and business users who are searching for a tiny laptop should consider the NB300. Nevertheless, it’s not a really fast netbook – its hard drive, in particular, is a little bit of a slow coach – so don’t expect it to be anything more than a convenient tool for web browsing, creating office documents and watching standard-definition videos.

The Toshiba NB300 comes equipped with an Intel Atom N450 CPU, which runs at 1.66GHz and has Hyper-Threading. It’s a much more advanced CPU than the Intel N280 CPU in previous generation netbooks – it has integrated graphics and memory controllers – but it is not faster. The NB300 will perform just like any other netbook in the marketplace and, actually, it is really a small slower compared to Toshiba NB200, which it replaces.

In the iTunes MP3 encoding test – in which we encode 53min worth of WAV files to 192Kbps MP3s – the Windows 7-based Toshiba NB300 recorded a time of 7min 46sec, which can be 11sec slower compared to Windows XP-based NB200. It’s not much of a difference within the overall scheme of things, but it shows that even though the NB300 is really a new-model netbook having a slightly various body kit and engine, it offers almost the same amount of horsepower. Whilst utilizing it for everyday tasks it occasionally feels sluggish, particularly when launching programs and switching windows. You just have to remember not to do too much at the same time.

The remainder of the configuration is 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM, integrated (in CPU) Intel GMA 3150 graphics and a 250GB hard drive. We wish it had 2GB of RAM instead – which is the maximum it can handle – but it can be upgraded very easily later on; all you have to do is remove the cover of the single memory slot. Hard drive upgrades aren’t as simple, as Torx screws have been utilized on its cover and it can’t be opened unless you’ve got a star-shaped screwdriver to hand.

One from the greatest functions of the Toshiba NB300 is its Sleep-and-Charge port. You can use it to charge MP3 players and phones with USB connections, even iPhones. That signifies you are able to leave your netbook switched off in your backpack and plug in your iPhone to charge it. It’s a excellent function for when you’re on the road. It was obtainable within the NB200, but it’s even more useful in the NB300 because the standard battery it ships with is so a lot bigger.

A 3D accelerometer is installed to assist detect excessive movement and park the hard drive heads to prevent data loss. It’s very sensitive by default – even vigorous typing can set it off – but you can turn down the sensitivity so that the hard drive isn’t usually stopping and starting.

Even although the Toshiba NB300 is slimmer compared to NB200 netbook it replaces, the big battery means that it weighs a little more: 1.25kg compared to 1.1kg. This is an excellent compromise and shouldn’t be observed being a downside, especially since the NB300 is still very convenient to carry with you everywhere you go.

The netbook feels no much less sturdy compared to NB200, even though its keyboard does bounce ever so slightly. Nevertheless, it’s a tactile keyboard that’s comfortable to kind on as the keys are big (18mm wide) and only a handful of are half-sized (including the alt, arrow, page, function and correct shift keys). The tilde crucial is the only misplaced key on the keyboard since it sits between the left alt and also the space bar instead of being next towards the 1.

There’s no built-in 3G module, nor an ExpressCard slot, but there are three USB 2. ports if you want to connect a 3G modem. The wireless radio supports 802.11n, which is a function we adore, so you get Bluetooth, so that you can transfer files from your phone or connect a cordless mouse.

As the slim, snazzy HP Mini 1000 is one of our favorite Netbooks, and we were excited to hear of a less expensive sequel. While the new  Mini 110 doesn’t stray far from the Mini 1000 mold, there are some subtle changes that are not always for the best.

At first glance, the two systems seem identical, but when we pulled out a Mini 1000 for a comparison, we saw the Mini 110 was slightly thicker and heavier. Not by much–but in a tiny Netbook form factor, a tiny change can make a big difference, especially when compared with something like the new Asus Eee PC 1008HA, which is slimmer than its predecessor is, not the other way around.

Other than that, we found a standard set of Netbook components, including an Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, Windows XP, and a 160GB 5,400rpm hard drive. The biggest advantage is that at $329, this new model is very competitively priced, especially when only a few months ago, the $350 Acer Aspire One seemed like the drop-dead entry point for XP Netbooks.

The bottom line: While the new, less expensive, HP Mini 110 doesn’t stray far from the Mini 1000 mold, there are some subtle changes–not always for the best.

While the general look and feel are very similar to the Mini 1000, when compared side by side, the Mini 110 looks a little bloated. Still, the Mini 1000 has always occupied the higher end of the Netbook price spectrum.

The same excellent keyboard, with wide, flat keys, is still one of our minilaptop favorites, but the touch pad remains a weakness in the Mini’s design. The wide-but-short surface makes scrolling a pain, and the mouse buttons are pushed to the far left and right sides, rather than sitting below the touch pad. We’re also not fans of the Mini’s power switch, which is a small slider on the front edge that’s hard to hit (although it does make it unlikely that you’ll accidentally turn the system off or on when you don’t mean to).  http://www.cheap-laptop-batteries.com/laptop-battery/acer-as09b56.htm

One new feature that did catch our eye was the inclusion of a third-party software app called Syncables, which promises to connect different machines on your local network, allowing you to easily share documents, photos, video, and music, and sync e-mail accounts, even across Windows, Mac, and Linux systems.

In theory, it seems like a good idea (we often use Gmail and Google docs for this kind of thing). In practice, we found the Syncables software difficult to use. The screens are clearly not designed with the Mini’s 1,024×576-pixel resolution in mind, the layout and navigation were confusing, even when installed on our desktop computer, and the entire process seemed fairly unintuitive.

The 10.1-inch wide-screen display has a 1,024×576-pixel native resolution, which is slightly lower than the 1,024×600-pixel resolution standard for a screen this size. That’s generally fine for most Web surfing, but long, vertical pages and Word documents can require a lot of scrolling to read. The edge-to-edge glass of previous models has been replaced by a standard inset panel. It’s not as slick a look, but the display itself was matte, instead of glossy, which is a very hard-to-find feature in a Netbook, and especially good if you’re bothered by screen glare.

The Mini 110 has more ports and connections than the Mini 1000 line, with a third USB port and a standard VGA output for video. Watch out for the split single headphone/mic jack, which can cause problems if you need to record and monitor audio at the same time.

Intel’s single-core 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU offers enough computing power for the basic tasks that Netbooks are designed–namely Web surfing, working on documents, and some basic multimedia playback. While the Asus Eee PC 1008HA offers a slightly faster N280 version of the Atom, this system performed on par with previous HP Mini Netbooks.  http://www.cheap-laptop-batteries.com/laptop-battery/asus-a32-f80a.htm

Netbook buyers must usually choose between three-cell and six-cell battery options. The smaller batteries commonly run from 2 to 3 hours, while a six-cell battery can be good for 5 hours or longer–but at the cost of added size and weight. In our video playback battery drain test, the Mini 110 ran for 2 hours and 22 minutes using the included three-cell battery. That’s somewhat less than we’d expect, as the original Mini 1000 ran 20 minutes longer on the same test. In casual use, for Web surfing and office work, you should get closer to 3 hours (or longer) of battery life.

N450-powered Dell Mini Inspiron – long battery life

April28

This is one of the first Dell N450-powered netbooks to go on special, so if battery-life is important to you, it’s worth a look. The N450 1.66GHz CPU is from Intel’s recently-announced Pine Trail family, which won’t give you more peformance but should extend your battery life compared to Intel’s previous N270 and N280 CPUs. In this case, with a six cell battery standard, Dell and JB-Hi-Fi claim this machine will run for around 9-hours. Normally, you need to take vendor battery claims with a pinch of salt, since most are based on running a laptop virtually in standby mode – but Pine Trail is about extending battery life, so 9 hours of average computing with a six-cell battery using a new N450 should be close to the truth. We’ll definitely be testing this shortly in our Labs.

The new Inspiron comes with 1GB of RAM in which Windows 7 Starter edition will run fine, and a 250GB hard disk. The 10in screen has 1024×600 resolution and Wi-Fi can do 802.11 b/g.

If battery life is not such a big deal for you, how does this special stack up against other netbooks also on special? For roughly the same price (also from JB Hi-Fi), you can get a Samsung netbook powered by an N280 with almost identical specs to the N450-powered Inspiron, but which also does Wireless N, for faster Wi-Fi connections.  Elsewhere, we’re starting to see retailers drop prices of netbooks powered by the older CPUs. For instance, Acer Aspire Ones are dropping into the $300 to $399 space at several retailers, while basic 10in ASUS Eee PCs are also starting to come down in price.
